Saint of the Day – August 3 – Saint Lydia Purpuraria

St. Lydia Purpuraria, also called Lydia of Thyatira (1st. c), was a pious and wealthy woman involved in the textile trade in Philippi, Macedonia. She and her husband manufactured and traded in the lucrative business of purple dyes and fabrics, a luxury for the elite. Lydia was a worshiper of the true God, and when St. Paul’s missionary journeys brought him to Philippi in about 50 A.D., God opened Lydia’s heart to accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Lydia and her family became St. Paul’s very first converts to Christianity, as mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. After her family was baptized, Lydia invited Paul and his companion, St. Timothy, to stay in her home. Lydia served the Lord through her gift of hospitality, and her home became a meeting place for the early Christians. After Paul and Silas were released from prison, it was to Lydia’s home that they first went to meet and encourage the believers gathered there. St. Lydia’s feast day is August 3.

Saint of the Day – June 29 – Saints Peter & Paul

Saints Peter and Paul’s Story

Peter (d. 64?) Saint Mark ends the first half of his Gospel with a triumphant climax. He has recorded doubt, misunderstanding, and the opposition of many to Jesus. Now Peter makes his great confession of faith: “You are the Messiah” (Mark 8:29b). It was one of the many glorious moments in Peter’s life, beginning with the day he was called from his nets along the Sea of Galilee to become a fisher of men for Jesus.

The New Testament clearly shows Peter as the leader of the apostles, chosen by Jesus to have a special relationship with him. With James and John he was privileged to witness the Transfiguration, the raising of a dead child to life, and the agony in Gethsemane. His mother-in-law was cured by Jesus. He was sent with John to prepare for the last Passover before Jesus’ death. His name is first on every list of apostles.

And to Peter only did Jesus say, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:17b-19).

But the Gospels prove their own trustworthiness by the unflattering details they include about Peter. He clearly had no public relations person. It is a great comfort for ordinary mortals to know that Peter also has his human weakness, even in the presence of Jesus.

He generously gave up all things, yet he can ask in childish self-regard, “What are we going to get for all this?” (see Matthew 19:27). He receives the full force of Christ’s anger when he objects to the idea of a suffering Messiah: “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Matthew 16:23b).

Peter is willing to accept Jesus’ doctrine of forgiveness, but suggests a limit of seven times. He walks on the water in faith, but sinks in doubt. He refuses to let Jesus wash his feet, then wants his whole body cleansed. He swears at the Last Supper that he will never deny Jesus, and then swears to a servant maid that he has never known the man. He loyally resists the first attempt to arrest Jesus by cutting off Malchus’ ear, but in the end he runs away with the others. In the depth of his sorrow, Jesus looks on him and forgives him, and he goes out and sheds bitter tears. The Risen Jesus told Peter to feed his lambs and his sheep (John 21:15-17).

Paul (d. 64?) If the most well-known preacher today suddenly began preaching that the United States should adopt Marxism and not rely on the Constitution, the angry reaction would help us understand Paul’s life when he started preaching that Christ alone can save us. He had been the most pharisaic of Pharisees, the most legalistic of Mosaic lawyers. Now he suddenly appears to other Jews as a heretical welcomer of Gentiles, a traitor and apostate.

Paul’s central conviction was simple and absolute: Only God can save humanity. No human effort—even the most scrupulous observance of law—can create a human good which we can bring to God as reparation for sin and payment for grace. To be saved from itself, from sin, from the devil, and from death, humanity must open itself completely to the saving power of Jesus.

Paul never lost his love for his Jewish family, though he carried on a lifelong debate with them about the uselessness of the Law without Christ. He reminded the Gentiles that they were grafted on the parent stock of the Jews, who were still God’s chosen people, the children of the promise.

Reflection

We would probably go to confession to Peter sooner than to any of the other apostles. He is perhaps a more striking example of the simple fact of holiness. Jesus says to us as he said, in effect, to Peter: “It is not you who have chosen me, but I who have chosen you. Peter, it is not human wisdom that makes it possible for you to believe, but my Father’s revelation. I, not you, build my Church.” Paul’s experience of the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus was the driving force that made him one of the most zealous, dynamic, and courageous ambassadors of Christ the Church has ever had. But persecution, humiliation, and weakness became his day-by-day carrying of the cross, material for further transformation. The dying Christ was in him; the living Christ was his life.

Saint of the Day – April 25 – Saint Mark

Saint Mark’s Story

Most of what we know about Mark comes directly from the New Testament. He is usually identified with the Mark of Acts 12:12. When Saint Peter escaped from prison, he went to the home of Mark’s mother.

Paul and Barnabas took him along on the first missionary journey, but for some reason Mark returned alone to Jerusalem. It is evident, from Paul’s refusal to let Mark accompany him on the second journey despite Barnabas’s insistence, that Mark had displeased Paul. Because Paul later asks Mark to visit him in prison, we may assume the trouble did not last long.

The oldest and the shortest of the four Gospels, the Gospel of Mark emphasizes Jesus’s rejection by humanity while being God’s triumphant envoy. Probably written for gentile converts in Rome—after the death of Peter and Paul sometime between A.D. 60 and 70—Mark’s Gospel is the gradual manifestation of a “scandal”: a crucified Messiah.

Evidently a friend of Mark—calling him “my son”—Peter is only one of this Gospel’s sources, others being the Church in Jerusalem (Jewish roots), and the Church at Antioch (largely gentile).

Like another Gospel writer Luke, Mark was not one of the 12 apostles. We cannot be certain whether he knew Jesus personally. Some scholars feel that the evangelist is speaking of himself when describing the arrest of Jesus in Gethsemane: “Now a young man followed him wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body. They seized him, but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked” (Mark 14:51-52).

Others hold Mark to be the first bishop of Alexandria, Egypt. Venice, famous for the Piazza San Marco, claims Mark as its patron saint; the large basilica there is believed to contain his remains.

A winged lion is Mark’s symbol. The lion derives from Mark’s description of John the Baptist as a “voice of one crying out in the desert” (Mark 1:3), which artists compared to a roaring lion. The wings come from the application of Ezekiel’s vision of four winged creatures to the evangelists.

Reflection

Mark fulfilled in his life what every Christian is called to do: proclaim to all people the Good News that is the source of salvation. In particular, Mark’s way was by writing. Others may proclaim the Good News by music, drama, poetry, or by teaching children around a family table.

Gospel:  John 11: 1-45

I’ve hear a lot these days that we live in a “cancel culture.”  Do you know what that is?  It’s when people say mean things about you and try to erase your very existence.  However, I disagree that we are living in a cancel culture.  I was in a cancel culture.  I was in the U.S. Army for 24 years and served in three wars.  They tried to put an expiration date on my birth certificate, and they were pretty darn good at it too.  That’s cancel culture.  We are not living in a cancel culture.  What we have here is an evil culture. People are trying to do evil under the appearance of good.  They are claiming what was evil is now good.  These sins are included in the four sins in scripture that cry out to Heaven for vengeance.  Members of the cancel culture scream at you just as they screamed at our Lord and crucified Him.  There’s nothing new under the sun as scripture says.  And there’s not. The good news for us is that we don’t have to be that way.  But, if you wrestle with pigs in the mud, the pigs doesn’t mind, but you’re going to get dirty.

Let me ask you a question.  Do you know what the secret to happiness is?  Want me to tell you?  Our Lord has told us to be holy. He said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.”  This is a peace that the world cannot take away.  So, if we seek and strive for holiness and to be one with our good Lord each day, we will have a happiness that no one can take away.  That doesn’t mean you won’t have your share of sorrows and troubles.  We all have our illnesses, and we all have our struggles.  Our loved ones have been taken from this world to Heaven.  That happens to us all.  It doesn’t mean Christ stopped loving us.  It means we are sharing in some of His Passion for the sake of the Body of His church, for our own redemption, and for the souls of others.  We know deep down that as long as we do not turn away from our Lord through mortal sin or unrepented venial sin, He will always be there.  Even though we cannot feel it, He is always present with us.  Our peace and joy will come later after our trial on Earth is done.  Our suffering is redemptive. 

Saint John Paul II was suffering from end-stage Parkinson’s.  He loved classical music, so they brought in a world famous orchestra and conductor to play for him.  I don’t know his name…it’s not ZZ Top, so it’s beyond me.  Because of the steroids he was on for the Parkinson’s, he was bloated, shaking and drooling. He could barely move.  The last piece the orchestra played was his favorite, and the orchestra played it so beautifully, it would have made angels weep.  When the orchestra finished playing, the conductor turned around and looked nervously at the Pope.  The conductor was a little scared, because they were playing for the pope.  The Holy Father could barely move, but he looked at the conductor and gave him a thumbs up.  Even in his suffering, you knew he was a man of God.  He had a happiness about him no matter what happened.  He had the weight of the whole Church on his shoulders.  He had a fatal illness that is terribly debilitating. But, he still had peace.  And, that’s what we can have, because we have Christ.  However, because we have Christ, we have an obligation to help others. 

So, how do we fight this so-called cancel culture?  We must try to be even more holy and to pray for people.  Some of them are like those in I see in the gated community, a state sponsored residence with its own security system.  Those incarcerated never had a chance.  They were abused in childhood, so the chances were less than average that they would have a good life.  They had a lot of things working against them.  Granted, they chose to do evil, but they had a lot more crosses than we do. That’s not an excuse, but it’s a mitigating factor.  How do we help those people who are evil and who try to say what we believe is evil and must change?  Even the Catholic Church says sometimes what we believe must change.  That’s not true.  They are lying.  They aren’t wrong…they are lying.  Educated people who know better are lying.  How do we change that?  Have a little chat with them?  Even though I’m almost 68, I’m still a soldier, and part of me would love to say, “Let’s go outside and discuss this.”  No.  Our Lord said to love them, sacrifice for them, and pray for them.  They were taught from a young age that sin was good.  We see the outcomes of sin and evil.   We don’t have to be like them.  But, instead of fighting with them, we need to love them. 

Those who advocate evil are just like little children who don’t get their way, and they throw a tantrum.  That’s me some days.  Ever had a child…or a husband…throw a temper tantrum?  What happens?  Like our guardian angels, and like any good parent, we slowly take them in our arms, close to our heart. They are all worn out from their temper tantrum and break down in tears.  So, we hold them close to our heart, giving them comfort and love.  That’s what we are to do with this cancel culture.  We can hold out our arms to them, no matter what they say to us, and no matter what they try to do to us.  We can pray for them, sacrifice for them, and slowly bring them in to our heart. 

This culture is not cancel…I know what cancel is. Cancel is evil.  We are living in an evil age.  Actually, every age is evil.  But, we don’t have to be like that.  Remember, when you grow close to Jesus, you have both a gift and a command to go out and bring others in and to change the culture.  What’s very sad about people who are caught up in the cancel culture is that they don’t see how blind they are. They are like someone who has had too much to drink.  The cops stop them, and they say, “I only had two beers!”  Really?  That math is wrong.  They can’t stand up, never mind drive.  “I’m okay!”  They don’t see it…they are blind.  It’s just like alcohol blinds the alcoholic and dope blinds the dope addict.  And, the only cure for that is divine love.

During my time working in hospitals, I’ve learned that the only proper way to treat a disease is to find out what the disease is.  So, we shouldn’t say it’s a cancel culture when it’s an evil one.  People who are not eradicating evil are promoting it.  There’s a big difference.  Saint Mother Teresa tried to eradicate evil, and look at the love she spread.  So this is what we do.  We don’t have to be like them; instead, we need to love them, to pray for them, and to sacrifice for them.

Saint of the Day – March 15th

The Story of Saint Louise de Marillac (August 12, 1591 – March 15, 1660)

Born near Meux, France, Louise lost her mother when she was still a child, her beloved father when she was but 15. Her desire to become a nun was discouraged by her confessor, and a marriage was arranged. One son was born of this union. But Louise soon found herself nursing her beloved husband through a long illness that finally led to his death.

Louise was fortunate to have a wise and sympathetic counselor, Francis de Sales, and then his friend, the bishop of Belley, France. Both of these men were available to her only periodically. But from an interior illumination she understood that she was to undertake a great work under the guidance of another person she had not yet met. This was the holy priest Monsieur Vincent, later to be known as Saint Vincent de Paul.

At first, he was reluctant to be her confessor, busy as he was with his “Confraternities of Charity.” Members were aristocratic ladies of charity who were helping him nurse the poor and look after neglected children, a real need of the day. But the ladies were busy with many of their own concerns and duties. His work needed many more helpers, especially ones who were peasants themselves and therefore, close to the poor and able to win their hearts. He also needed someone who could teach them and organize them.

Only over a long period of time, as Vincent de Paul became more acquainted with Louise, did he come to realize that she was the answer to his prayers. She was intelligent, self-effacing, and had physical strength and endurance that belied her continuing feeble health. The missions he sent her on eventually led to four simple young women joining her. Her rented home in Paris became the training center for those accepted for the service of the sick and poor. Growth was rapid and soon there was the need for a so-called “rule of life,” which Louise herself, under the guidance of Vincent, drew up for the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Monsieur Vincent had always been slow and prudent in his dealings with Louise and the new group. He said that he had never had any idea of starting a new community, that it was God who did everything. “Your convent,” he said, “will be the house of the sick; your cell, a hired room; your chapel, the parish church; your cloister, the streets of the city or the wards of the hospital.” Their dress was to be that of the peasant women. It was not until years later that Vincent de Paul would finally permit four of the women to take annual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. It was still more years before the company would be formally approved by Rome and placed under the direction of Vincent’s own congregation of priests.

Many of the young women were illiterate. Still it was with reluctance that the new community undertook the care of neglected children. Louise was busy helping wherever needed despite her poor health. She traveled throughout France, establishing her community members in hospitals, orphanages and other institutions. At her death on March 15, 1660, the congregation had more than 40 houses in France. Six months later Vincent de Paul followed her in death.

Louise de Marillac was canonized in 1934 and declared patroness of social workers in 1960.

Reflection

In Louise’s day, serving the needs of the poor was usually a luxury only fine ladies could afford. Her mentor, Saint Vincent de Paul, wisely realized that women of peasant stock could reach poor people more effectively, and the Daughters of Charity were born under her leadership. Today, that order—along with the Sisters of Charity—continues to nurse the sick and aging and provide refuge for orphans. Many of its members are social workers toiling under Louise’s patronage. The rest of us must share her concern for the disadvantaged.

Sermon Notes: January 30 – 31, 2021: “I Want Pizza!”

Gospel:  Mark 1:21-28

How do we pass on the message of Christ?  How do we bring Christ to people?  Well, the answer is rather simple.  It really is.  You don’t need to learn anything new.  You don’t have to sign up for a course.  It doesn’t cost anything.  You just tell people the good news – not your good news, but His.  Saint Francis of Assisi said “Preach the gospel at all times and, if necessary, use words.”  Preach the gospel, whether in season or out of season, convenient or inconvenient, and use words if necessary.  If it’s necessary to use words, what words do we use?  We use the words of Christ.  We talk as He talked, and use the same words He used.  So, what were the words He used?  We have them, and they provide an air of authority, because they are true.  They are the very Word of God. 

The only time Jesus was angry or rebuked someone was when He was dealing with Satan.  He didn’t run up and down aisles screaming and shouting.  He didn’t do that.  He never raised His voice.  His sermons were not very long, and He didn’t use props except for children so that He could shame the apostles.  The Sermon on the Mount is one of the greatest sermons ever given.  Jesus went up on the mountain, sat down, and delivered an eight sentence sermon about the Beatitudes to over 5,000 people.  His words carried and everyone heard Him.  He didn’t speak long, but He spoke with words that everyone heard.  On another occasion, our good Lord went out onto a lake in a boat and preached to a crowd gathered on the shore. That’s very difficult to do when you’re on the water. But, everyone heard Him. 

In Acts, Peter preached at Pentecost to the Jews gathered in Jerusalem for the feast.  Every heart heard him, even though the people there were from different countries and spoke different languages.  Peter didn’t run up and down the aisles.  That’s not preaching – that’s a performance.  Preach as Jesus did.  Paul thought he had a better idea when he went to Athens.  He decided to jazz up the message and make it really hip.  He changed the sermon to make it more meaningful.  I love that word – meaningful – almost as much as I love the word “tasteful.”  Well, everything has a taste.  For example, horse manure has taste…you won’t like it, but it has taste.  Oh, this is very tasty.  That doesn’t mean it’s good or bad.  Paul tried to develop a relationship by getting down on the same level as the Athenians.  Instead of raising them up, he went down and taught on their level and in their language.  What happened?  He got only two disciples.  When he left there, he did an after-action report and had one of those  V-8 moments.  I will only preach Christ and Him Crucified.  And, then look what happened.  He preached the way Christ preached…by actions and by words.  The words he used were Christ’s words.  We should not use our words or the words that we think Christ would say.  “But, God is telling me to do this.”  You need some medicine.  Preach like Christ did.  That’s what He told us to do.  It doesn’t have to be long, and it doesn’t have to be loud.  Christ sat and taught.  He didn’t use props. Also, people were not fed their way to Jesus.  “Give them pizza, and they will come.”  Yeah…they eat the free pizza, and then they leave.  We had a food ministry in the military called Bible study lunch.  I went to one, because I wanted the free pizza.  The soldiers ate the free pizza, and then they left.  There was nothing the chaplains could do about it.  Those were the rules, and the soldiers knew that.  They weren’t stupid.  They may have been paratroopers, but they weren’t stupid. 

Teach as Jesus taught by using His exact words.  Those words give us the authority, not for us, but so that every heart hears the words it was meant to hear.  Now, in case someone is thinking, “Well, your life is not perfect.”  Oh, heck no.  My life is not perfect at all.  The words are not my words. I’m just a conduit.  I’m just passing along what our good Lord said.  The focus must be on the message and not the messenger. I am trying to live like our good Lord said, and I’m having problems with that, so if you would pray for me, I’d really appreciate it.  People are surprised when we don’t defend ourselves by saying something like, “Oh, I’m a great Christian.” 

How do we tell people about Jesus?  Do as Jesus did.  Preach as Jesus preached.  Use words if necessary.

How will you apply this message to your life?  Will you tell others about the good news of Jesus Christ?  Will you do as He did and preach as He preached?

Father’s Afterthoughts…

  • Last night, I had to smile while reading the Old Testament.  All I could think of was that God is Italian.  You know why?  He put out a contract for a hit on all the false prophets.  Wow!  He means business.

  • I was at the hospital on Friday. You should see the working conditions I work under…it’s not just the smells and everything else.   Anyway, I came out of a room and said something to the nurse who said, “You know, Father, you should have gone to medical school.”  I said, “Really?  How…as a student or cadaver?”  Fair question.

The Bible in a Year – Day 327 – Origin of the Diaconate

Fr. Mike draws our attention to the cultural division present in the early Church and the origin of the ordination to the diaconate. He also discusses Paul’s frustration with those who didn’t recognize Jesus as the Christ and offers consolation to those who experience this in the hearts and minds of those close to them, as Paul did. The Bible in a Year – Day 329 – The Ethiopian Eunuch

Fr. Mike focuses on the story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch and how it demonstrates the importance of having guidance when reading Scripture. Although God’s Word is infallible, we can easily misunderstand it without proper interpretation, which is why we have the Magisterium of the Church. Lastly, Fr. Mike also touches on the role of persecution in the life of the Church, and St. Paul’s encouragement to abide by the law of love. Today we read Acts 8, Romans 13-14, and Proverbs 27:15-17.

The Bible in a Year – Day 335 – Run the Race

As we continue to follow the missions of Paul and Barnabas, Fr. Mike highlights the fickle nature of humanity and the futility of striving for the praise of men. He also encourages us to remain courageous in the tribulations we face, finding strength in other believers, and running toward the eternal and imperishable goal of salvation. Today’s readings are Acts 14, 1 Corinthians 9-10, and Proverbs 28:7-9.
